Hopper's figures are never quite alone and never quite together. They occupy the same frame without occupying the same world. He understood something about modern isolation that we're still trying to articulate — that you can be surrounded and still be unreachable.

Brutalist architecture doesn't pretend. The concrete is concrete; the structure is the facade. There's something almost moral about a building that refuses to hide what it's made of — especially in an era when everything is veneer.
